WA AFTRS

Tom Lubin is the WA representative of AFTRS - the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.

AFTRS is the national centre for professional education and advanced training in film, television and radio.

Mission Statement

To advance the success and sustainability of Australia's screen and broadcast industries by developing the skills and knowledge of talented individuals and undertaking leading-edge research. AFTRS aims to transform the abilities of individuals and strengthen the skills base of the industry.

Location

AFTRS is located at purpose-built premises at North Ryde, Sydney and has state offices or representatives in most capital cities in Australia.

Courses

AFTRS accepts around 100 students each year in its full-time postgraduate programs with a further 5000 students undertaking courses in the national short course program. Courses are organised around 13 specialist teaching departments. NOTE: Full-time courses are open only to Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia.

Digital Media Department

This department runs the following courses:

  • Master of Arts: Film and Television - Digital Media
  • Graduate Diploma: Film and Television - Digital Media
  • Graduate Diploma: Film and Television - Digital Media, flexible delivery
  • Graduate Certificate - 3D Animation
  • Graduate Certificate - Motion Graphics and Emerging Media Design

It also runs a wide range of industry development programs and short courses throughout Australia in digital animation, compositing, digital design, project management, interactive media writing and design.

LAMP

LAMP is facilitated by the Australian Film TV and Radio School, directed by Gary Hayes and consists of projects proposed by any group in the Australian entertainment industry. It enables the conception and development of future media content and services operating on neutral ground - encouraging collaboration between Australian Industry Project teams and mentors. The four stage process will equip participants and project teams with the tools they need to create compelling interactive content meeting the needs of the audience and marketplace. LAMP is strategically content and service focused, with a healthy mix of creativity, business, technical and audience centricity.

The residential labs have been sponsored by SAFC, ABC TV, Screen Tasmania and AFTRS.

The four stages of LAMP

  • One or half-day seminars and workshops - The orientation day will introduce potential teams to Lamp and it’s methods and will help guide teams towards applying to the next stage
  • Rapid prototyping on residential retreats - Quick format content development through 5 day residential retreats for focused, pitch based, prototype development
  • Further build and user testing - Lab development (in partnership with 3rd party companies) to a stage where user testing, interative interface development and technical sand-boxing can be taken forward
  • Final build and deployment - Selected projects (in partnership with 3rd party companies) may be taken to full deployment. This is of course dependent on IP, business needs and complexity of project

The residentials are an ideal way to further develop your concepts, cross fertilise with teams from other genre areas and bring some serendipity into your project. Some of the activities that will occur during the week are:

  • getting to the core, the killer cross-platform ideas focused on through a variety of exercises
  • strategic presentations aimed at teams to open up their ideas considering business, technical, creative and audience centric issues
  • mentor one-to-ones where projects are pulled apart and bigger potential suggested
  • masterclasses in cross-platform design - gain deeper insight into interactive thinking
  • rapid building - using a range of tools prototypes will be developed
  • final, showcase presentations of this core interactive feature to key invitees

Mentors will both stretch and contract ideas during the week and, in the process, provide teams with a unique perspective on how to achieve the most compelling version of their idea. At the end of the week an invited audience, that may include press, decision makers in the industry and other key stakeholders, will view presentations of your projects.
